Welcome to Systems Interoperability Framework Australia

What is SIF?

The Systems Interoperability Framework (SIF) is a set of industry developed and supported technical blueprints that enable k-12 software applications to work seamlessly together as a single, efficient system. These open source, free to use blueprints – SIF Specifications – make it possible for diverse applications to interact and share data, now and in the future. The SIF Association, a global non-profit organisation dedicated to interoperability between educational applications, has been working toward this goal since 1997.

SIF Specifications, developed by SIF Association members, identifies a set of common definitions for school information (Data Objects) and a set of rules for data sharing (Infrastructure). By creating these interoperable standards, SIF ensures that all vendors can use SIF Specifications and that all educational systems will be able to implement them regardless of the technology. Guaranteeing that SIF is an open, vendor neutral and platform independent standard is the important guiding principle of the SIF Association.

Australia Commits To SIF

The National Schools Interoperability Program (NSIP) has introduced SIF into Australia. It represents a joint effort and commitment by all Australian school Education systems to develop an Australian implementation. The SIF Association AU will deliver a practical solution to allow vendor products to work together at the school and school system level and make it easier for schools, teachers and education authorities to access the data that they need.

Australian schools are taking a significant step forward in achieving the goals of the national Digital Education Revolution by being able to exchange information seamlessly and securely utilizing SIF.  Read the Press Release ==>

SIF Implementation Specification (Australia) 1.2

The SIF Association AU Management Board (SIFAAMB) has agreed to release the SIF Implementation Specification (Australia) 1.2.

Adam Todhunter, SIFAAMB Chair, acknowledges the contribution of jurisdictions, vendors, the SIF Association and the SIF Community in achieving this milestone.

The SIF Association AU Program is currently working to:

  • Undertake a series of pilot integration projects.
  • Further develop the Specification, including a Student Information Systems Baseline Profile
  • Support the governing bodies that oversee the SIF Association AU.
  • Engage Australian software vendors to encourage take-up. This includes communication about the benefits of SIF and incorporating SIF Implementation requirements into Request for Tender documentation.
